Driver remains in jail 0
The driver charged in connection with last May’s three-car pile-up on Highway 17 will stay in custody for now.
Shadi Al-Akbari, 26, of Ottawa, faces four charges rising from the collision on the Canadian Pacific Railway overpass west of Petawawa on May 22 which resulted in serious injuries to one other driver. The accused was also injured in the mishap and was taken to Pembroke Regional Hospital.
On Tuesday, Mr. Al-Akbari made a brief appearance in Pembroke provincial court where the Crown and defence lawyers agreed to proceed with a bail hearing on July 30. Earlier this month, the court had the accused undergo a psychiatric assessment.
Mr. Akbari has been charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm, criminal negligence causing bodily harm and flight from police. He also faces a charge of theft under $5,000 in connection with the alleged theft of gas and property from a convenience store in Arnprior. The incident remains under investigation by the province’s Special Investigations Unit.
