Cyclist killed on Hwy. 17 0

PETAWAWA – Highway 17 was closed for over eight hours Monday as investigators sorted through a fatal accident scene where a transport truck and a cyclist collided.
At approximately 6:30 a.m. an eastbound 2001 Freightliner transport truck driven by 53-year-old Rodger Chapman of Morrisburg collided and with an east-bound cyclist. Mr. Chapman was not injured in the accident.
However, the cyclist, Kevin Malott of Chalk River was pronounced deceased at the scene. The collision left Mr. Malott’s bike and belongings scattered across the two-lane highway. According to the Royal Canadian Dragoons’ Facebook page, Mr. Malott was a warrant officer with the Dragoons.
The accident occurred on a straight stretch of highway leading up to the railway overpass.
Ontario Provincial Police Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) were on scene, spending the day recording and documenting information. Ministry of Transportation Ontario officials were also at the scene investigation the collision, ensuring the truck was operating properly.
The highway was closed from Paquette Road to Duke Crossing.
Small vehicles were detoured at Paquette Road through the base’s training area to Duke’s Crossing where they were directed back to the highway.
Although, dozens of transport trucks waited for the highway to reopen, many made the two and half hour detour to Highway 60 through Algonquin Park.
The highway was reopened at 3 p.m.
This is the second fatality to occur on the highway between the railway overpass and the Petawawa Research Forest this summer.
Provincial Constable Erin Pouliot is investigating the accident. The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP detachment is asking people who may have witnessed the accident to contact the detachment at 613-735-0188.
