PEMBROKE -

The Pembroke Fire Department is continuing its Thanksgiving tradition on Saturday, Oct. 6, as it again opens its doors to the public.

The open house and charity barbecue, under the theme “Have 2 Ways Out,” is scheduled to run 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and kicks off Fire Prevention Week. It is being held at the Fire Hall, located at 273 Victoria Street.

The barbecue is again sponsored by the Pembroke Professional Firefighters Association, whose members are encouraging the public to bring non-perishable food items to the event which will be collected for the Salvation Army’s food bank.

Victoria Street in front of the fire station from Renfrew to Isabella Streets will be closed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the event to allow the department time to set up, then clean up the site afterwards.

The open house is a chance for the public to meet the chief and firefighters, see the gear and fire trucks, and view fire extinguisher demonstrations, an aerial ladder climb, try out hose stations which gives kids a chance to try out the tools of the firefighters’ trade, get a chance to examine both the water rescue boat and the Bickle antique fire truck close up, and take tours of the fire hall. There will also be the opportunity to exchange smoke alarms for new ones, video presentations and educational displays.

The department will also be holding its popular Firefighter for a Day contest for the younger set, allowing a lucky person or two to have a chance to hang out with the firefighters, have lunch, do some real training and take a ride in one of the fire trucks.
