'Tis the season for gift wrapping 0

Once again the Pembroke Boys and Girls Club elves are spreading the holiday cheer and helping those who love the shopping, but not the wrapping.

The gift wrapping campaign, which is the club's longest running fundraiser, officially kicked off at the Pembroke Mall Saturday morning. Pembroke Mall manager Jayne Brophy gave an abbreviated gift wrapping demonstration, while Pembroke Mayor Ed Jacyno, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant and MP John Yakabuski were on hand to cut the Christmas ribbon along with Boys and Girls Club board chairwoman Keanan Stone and board member Rhodina Turner, who is co-ordinating the gift wrapping campaign. Gift wrapping is also provided at the Pembroke Walmart Supercentre.

All of the money raised goes directly to programs provided by the Boys and Girls Club, which include the Access Hockey Program for children who've never played hockey or don't know how to skate, which takes place Saturday night at the Pembroke Memorial Centre, as well as Tuesday night floor hockey and Torch Club, a new leadership program and Wednesday recreation nights. All of these programs are run out of Fellowes High School.

When Turner joined the board four years ago, she was surprised to learn about the number of programs offered by the club and she now sees it as a vital part of Pembroke and the surrounding community. She thanked Brophy for providing the space in the mall.

Stone thanked those volunteers who will give of their time in the next two weeks. While many of the same businesses and individuals volunteer each year there are still limited spaces for people who love wrapping presents and giving back to the community.

“Thank you so much to the volunteers,” Stone said. “We wouldn't be able to do this without you.”

There are still spots available for anyone wishing to volunteer in two-hour blocks of time, or more.

The wrapping service will be provided at the Pembroke Mall Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Dec. 15 and 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Dec. 16 and 23 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Dec. 17 to 21 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

At Walmart the gift wrapping service is available Dec. 14, 15, 17-21 and 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Dec. 16 and 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
