Daily Observer welcomes Myriam Lublink

Article content

My name is Myriam Lublink and I've just moved from Trenton, Ont. to the lovely city of Pembroke.

I've been studying photojournalism at Loyalist College in Belleville for the past two years and I am now out on my own in the 'real world.’

During my time at Loyalist, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph and report on some very different things. I’ve covered council meetings, photographed different community events and even interviewed Michael Martchenko, the illustrator of Robert Munsch’s books for children.

I enjoy the thrill of waking up on an average day with no idea as to what I’ll be writing about or photographing just a few hours later. My favourite example of this was the day I had to photograph a ‘pet and owner’. I sent messages to everyone I knew in the area, asking if they knew someone with an interesting pet and who had a bit of free time. Within just two hours of receiving the assignment, I had a photograph of a leopard gecko crawling up the owner’s face.

I’ve loved writing and taking photos since I was a child. In high school, I wrote three articles for each edition of the local newspaper, The Blueberry Connection. I was writing these articles simply because I liked to write. It didn’t occur to me that I could continue journalism as a career later in life.

The Blueberry Connection was based out of Jonquiere, Que. I lived there for four years, but that is not where I consider home to be. My father is in the military so home has become ‘where ever I live right now.’

Moving every couple of years has given me the opportunity to meet new people and the ability to compare different communities. I think moving around is part of what makes me love the world of journalism. You never know what’s coming, or when it is coming.

To complete my studies and receive a diploma in photojournalism from Loyalist College, I am required to do a three-week internship at a newspaper or magazine of my choice. I will be living in the area on a permanent basis as of June, so interning at The Daily Observer seemed like a good first step into the ‘real world’.

I’m looking forward to being a part of the world of journalism at a professional level, not just at a college level.
