PMBVL enters into it's playoffs

Article content

It was win or go home time as the Pembroke Mixed Beach Volleyball League (PMBVL) playoffs began Sunday. This single elimination week matched up teams to see who moves on to the final four next weekend.

The first game of the day saw the second place team 4 Pete play the seventh place Dustin the Dusters. 4 Pete had been walking through opponents all year and Sunday looked to be much of the same. Glenn Martin and David Aucoin put 4 Pete ahead by two sets. Not ready to give up and wanting their beach season to continue Dustin The Dusters dug deep and played an inspired third set with Olivia Robinson and Sarah Donovan leading the way. The fourth set however was just too much for Dustin the Dusters. 4 Pete came away with a 3-1 victory 25-19, 25-15, 24-26, and 25-10.

The second game of the day was a very tight match-up on paper as the fourth ranked Sandy Balls played the fifth ranked Suns Out Guns Out. The first set of this game saw many battles at the net between Suns Out Guns Out's Luke Lapierre and Sandy Balls' Ron Ethier. The experience of Suns Out Guns Out was enough to pull them ahead in the first two sets, however, Sandy Balls proved they weren't going to roll over and stuck around to win the third set and put a scare into Suns Out Guns Out. A strong final set by Gareth Martin and Erica Lapierre saw Suns Out Guns Out pull the upset in four sets  25-20, 25-17, 23-25, and 25-17.

Sunday's third game was to be the first seed 4 Play on the Beach playing the eighth seed Sets on the Beach, however, due to a scheduling conflict Sets On the Beach were unable to play giving 4 Play On the Beach a bye week before next week's final four.

In the final matchup for last Sunday, third place I'd Hit That lined up with sixth place Smokin Aces. The two very evenly matched teams split the first two sets with Smokin Aces continuing their dump and tip style and I'd Hit That responding with a "watch this one" attitude. Smokin Aces clinched the three sets before injury struck the already ailing I'd Hit That. Beth Turner hurt her wrist and had to leave the game which left I'd Hit That a player short. Smokin Aces took advantage of the injury pulling the upset and winning in four sets 25-19, 19-25, 25-16, and 25-17.

The final four will take place Sunday Aug. 18 at Fellowes High School. Games will be at noon, 1:30, 3:00 and 4:30. Spectators are always welcome.
