LONDON, Ont. — A three-year-old boy was rushed to hospital after he was found face down in a pond in the city’s east end on Friday.

The boy remains in critical condition in hospital, Const. Frank Figliomeni said.

“He was found by a family member” in the back of the property, Figliomeni said. “We’re in preliminary investigations so there are a lot of things that are undetermined. We are taking a lot of statements and trying to figure out exactly what happened.”

Figliomeni couldn’t say if the boy wandered to the pond by himself or if he was with family members.

“We don’t know the timeline on how long the child was out there,” Figliomeni said.

Police tape surrounded an area several hundred metres off the road behind the house, near a barn, where the boy was found.

“There are a few very key occurrences you get your blood up for — officer needs assistance or a child not breathing...absolutely one of those cases today,” the constable said.

“We’ll just hope for the best.”

Neighbours and family members gathered at the home Friday afternoon after the ambulance took the boy to hospital, but it wasn’t clear, Figliomeni said, if there had been a Good Friday family get-together prior to the emergency at the pond.
