Bring on the heat: 'Fairly pleasant summer' in store

After a wicked winter across most of the country, Canadians can expect a pretty average summer.

In a summer preview, Weather Network chief meteorologist Chris Scott said everyone can expect a "fairly pleasant summer."

"We've broken the back of this rather lousy weather pattern," Scott said Monday of the cold temperatures that lingered long into spring.

From Alberta to Ontario to Atlantic Canada, we will see about average temperatures and average precipitation in June, July and August, he said.

Manitoba and Ontario may see slightly below-average temperatures, while Quebec and Atlantic Canada will be slightly above, but it won't be too far off the norms, he said.

"We will still get our shots of heat," Scott said for those who enjoy sweating it out on a hot summer day.

"We can't rule out seeing a couple of heat waves," he said, but added there will be more refreshing days than really hot ones. "We won't see the extended, scorching heat."

But don't fret beach lovers.

"If you've been working out to fit into those Speedos, you'll still get your chance to shine."

He said there are concerns for areas like the B.C. Interior, where above average temperatures and below-normal precipitation is expected, increasing the risk of forest fires.

Winnipeg, on the other hand, is in for good news. It was one of the coldest cities in the world relative to normal for the past several months.

"We don't think (Winnipeg will) be as down in the dumps for the next few months," Scott said.

Farmers should be happy with the forecast, too.

"It's always tough when you have a late start to the planting season," he said, but added the normal precipitation and temperatures should help a lot.
