Wrong address sent to seniors raises concerns of election day mistakes

OTTAWA — Residents at a seniors housing co-op in Ottawa are fuming after receiving incorrect voter information in the mail for the June 12 provincial election, and many are wondering if similar mistakes might keep others from voting.

Pat Moreau said a notice of registration card from Elections Ontario arrived last week, instructing that her voting booth would be at an address about 7 km from her seniors residence.

"People said, 'well, we're not going to vote,'" since the location is too far, Moreau said.

The actual school where the voting station will be set up, however, is about 800 metres — and within walking distance — from the seniors co-op.

Elections Ontario apparently gave the seniors the address to the school board offices, rather than the school.

"Even if a senior was able to get all the way out to W. Hunt Club, they would not be able to vote there," said Moreau.

New cards are to be issued, she's been told, but she's upset such a mistake could have been made. And wonders how many others like it might keep people away from voting boots on June 12.

"How many mistakes have they made that we're not aware of, and how much money is this going to cost us?" asked Moreau.

Elections Ontario staff confirmed the error Monday.
