Three former Pembroke Lumber Kings are being considered in the first round of balloting for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award.

In the running this year are all members of the 2011 RBC Cup championship team – goalie Jamie Phillips and forwards Matthew Peca and Matthew Zay.

As of Tuesday afternoon Phillips, a junior at Michigan Tech, leading the votes with 42,199. Peca, a senior at Quinnipiac, had 1,514 votes and Zay, a senior at Mercyhurst, had 114 votes. Zay was also considered in the first phase of voting for the award in 2014.

The award has been presented annually since 1981 to the top hockey player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). This year 61 players are included in the opening round of balloting.
