Renfrew County Family and Children's Services grillmaster Paul Elliott keeps the tasty treats coming as FCS hosts its Summer Smiles Campaign community fundraising barbecue on Thursday, July 28.

Renfrew County Family and Children's Services hosted a fundraising barbecue on Thursday to raise money for their Summer Smiles campaign, and they're hoping local businesses and organizations will follow their example.

"Our fundraiser, Dave Henderson, decided that we'd like to challenge businesses in the area to host something similar," explains executive director Arijana Haramancic, "like a barbecue or other event to recognize the Summer Smiles campaign and show their support."

The organization is on a quest to surpass last year's tally of 209 Renfrew County children sent to one of several participating sleepaway and day camps.
"We're hoping to reach our high of 250 kids going to camp," says Haramancic. "So far we've got about 200 going, but we'd like 250."

A team of FCS employees and volunteers laid out a spread and fired up the barbecue in front of the Isabella Street former school building location of the Ontario Early Years Centre, among other FCS services, and spent the day greeting, welcoming and feeding a steady stream of passers-by and hungry visitors.

With the proverbial baton passed to the business community to continue the efforts of sending local kids to camp, event planners with FCS are now turning their attention to what was one of the biggest parties of last year: Mardi Gras.

According to developmental services manager Marianne Taylor, the next Fat Tuesday celebration will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 72.

"It was a great success last year," says Taylor, "and we are planning now to make it bigger and better this year. We're just beginning to put the details together, but the Legion is a great partner and they're working along with us."
