Speciality: Women’s 800 metres
Competition dates: Preliminaries are Aug. 17 (heat 4 – 10:16 a.m.) , semifinals are Aug. 18 and final is Aug. 20.
Road to Rio: A member of Canada’s 2012 Olympic team, Bishop, 28, has twice set the Canadian record in the event. A silver medallist at last year’s world championships, she punched her ticket at nationals by winning the event.
Favourite food: Burrito bowls or stuffed sweet potatoes
Favourite artist: – “I like ’90s hip hop, rap or sometimes some really good country music,” Bishop said
Favourite song: “Before the race at nationals, Petey Pablo, Missy Elliott,” Bishop said. “Old school Ja Rule. You know, early high school days, that kind of music.”
Favourite animal: “I love my dog at home.”
Athlete most admired: “Diane Cummins,” Bishop said of the former national record holder in the event. “She’s been a really big help to me.”
Person most admired: “My grandma, Victoria Hawkins,” Bishop said. “She’s instilled really hard work and you’ve got to work for what you want in life. I think my mom did a really good job passing that down to me and I hope I can be half the woman that these women were to me.”
If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing: “Before I got into this, I would have told you a teacher,” Bishop said. “I would have said that last year, but now I want to explore some more options. I’ve met so many people on this journey and I want to see what else is out there. I think there’s many opportunities and I’m not sure what I want to do yet.”
Thoughts on Zika virus: “Concerned? Yes,” Bishop said. “Will I miss the Olympic Games for it? Never. We’re working with a real close medical team to make sure this doesn’t affect us. This is the Olympic Games. This is our epitome of our career. It’s not like in LPGA or NBA. We need the Olympics to showcase what we can do. We only pop up every four years.”
Favourite sport other than your own: “I really liked volleyball,” Bishop said. “I played it in high school.”
Career highlight to date: “I know I’ve already rewritten the Canadian record (a second time), but when I ran the Canadian record in Beijing last year (in the world championship semis),” Bishop said. “That was a really special moment. The silver medal’s right up there, but the record’s a smidge more.”
Favourite place in Windsor area: “Probably a restaurant,” Bishop said. “I don’t get out much. We travel so much that I just like to be home.”
