Kiwanis Club Food Drive coming up in Pembroke this Saturday

By Pembroke Daily Observer

On Saturday, Sept. 24, the Kiwanis Club of Pembroke will sponsor their fifth annual Food Drive in Pembroke.

Starting at 10 a.m. and going to 4 p.m., volunteers will be at the entrances to major grocery stores, providing special bags and asking shoppers to make special purchases for local food banks. Grocery shoppers are asked to purchase a few extra groceries, pay for them and then place them in the brown paper bag and put them in the carts or special boxes at the entrances to the participating grocery stores.

The food is equally divided between the St. Joseph’s Food Bank and the Salvation Army Food Bank. As autumn approaches both food banks appreciate this effort by the Kiwanis Club to restock their shelves.

In past years, more than 70 volunteer hours have resulted in more than $6,000 worth of food being collected. The food banks and the Kiwanis Club hope that the public will once again support this initiative. The success of this food drive is achieved with the co-operation of No Frills (West End Mall), Moncions Metro, Giant Tiger (both east and west doors) and Food Basics (Pembroke Mall). Unfortunately, Walmart is unable to support this project this year so there will not be Kiwanians at that location.

The club extends its thanks to the many grocery shoppers who are so generous during Saturday’s campaign by the Kiwanis Club volunteers.
