Emmy Rossum: I was naked for my wedding proposal

Emmy Rossum was naked in the bath when her fiance, Sam Esmail, popped the question.

The actress, best known for her roles in ‘Shameless,’ got engaged to her writer/director boyfriend in August 2015 after two years of dating. But during an appearance on Chelsea Handler’s Netflix show, Rossum explained that the proposal wasn’t the smoothest.

“I happened to be in the bathtub when it happened,” Rossum told Handler on Thursday’s episode. “And then I realised that it was happening. And then I got out of the bathtub because I didn’t want the story to be that I was in the bathtub when it was happening. And then I got cold as it was still going on, got back in the bathtub.

“It was a comedy of errors, but it all worked out.”

Rossum added she was more than a little surprised by Esmail’s proposal. However, she admitted she never had a “fairy tale” proposal scenario she wanted to become reality.

“I was more excited by the idea, the concept of marriage and togetherness with the person and unity,” she added.

The couple made headlines in July when her Shameless co-star, Shanola Hampton, suggested her friend had secretly wed in a post on social media.

Hampton had taken to Twitter to celebrate the six Primetime Emmy nominations Esmail’s sci-fi series Mr. Robot had landed, but she appeared to let some news slip as she congratulated her pal’s man.

“To the genius that is @samesmail,” she began, “CONGRATS on marrying my girl @emmyrossum, oh and on SIX #EmmyNominations!”

Rossum did not comment directly on the marriage reference, but shared the message on her Twitter page and replied with a smiley face emoji. Her coy post sparked reports the couple may have already wed, but Rossum returned to Twitter later on to clear up the claims.

After one fan asked if the news was true, she responded, “hahaha nope not yet!”

Rossum and Esmail met when he directed the actress in 2014 romantic comedy/drama Comet. She was previously married to music executive Justin Siegel, but they split in 2010 after almost two years together.
