Did Mark Hamill ruin Jedi surprise in the ‘80s?

How about this for a spoiler alert.

In a newly unearthed interview (which first appeared on the Hollywood Reporter) with Mark Hamill and the late Gene Siskel recorded after the release of Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of Jedi, Hamill may have dropped clues as to the future of his character Luke Skywalker.

When asked if he would play Skywalker again, Hamill replied: “George (Lucas) has talked to me very marginally about doing something at the turn of the century in the last trilogy, but it wouldn't be on the same plan of existence.”

Siskel, seizing on the scoop, said: "What it sounds like is he offered you a job to play a father [with] a Luke Jr. around the year 2000."

Hamill smiled replying, "You're a very clever man, Mr. Siskel."

Lucas, who created the Star Wars series in 1977, always intended the franchise to span nine films and shared his ideas for Episode VII, VIII and IX when he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012.

There has been much speculation that Rey (Daisy Ridley) is Luke’s daughter and that Luke himself may have turned to the dark side in this year’s eight instalment, The Last Jedi.

Of course, it's been 30-plus years since the interview and the scripts for the new trilogy were completely written from scratch, so maybe this doesn't spoil anything.

Still, it’s fun to think how this little kernel of information — so innocuous in the 1980s — would have been dissected in today’s world.
