County athletes win eight events at regionals

Renfrew County proved to be a force to be reckoned with as high school athletes competed in regional track and field competition last month winning eight events.
Local athletes competed at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) East Regionals Track and Field Championships held May 25-26 at the Terry Fox Athletic Centre. The top four finishers advanced to the OFSAA finals in Belleville.
Eve Denault, from Fellowes High School, emerged as the big star winning both the junior girls shot put and the junior girl discus throw. Eve attained a distance of 11.35 metres in the shot put and 28.50 metres in the discus throw. Austin Ingram, from Valour High School, continued his winning streak taking gold in the boys 100-metre visually impaired dash, in 12.18 seconds, and first place in the 800-metre run with a time of two minutes, 39 seconds.
Valour's Nick Bauernschmitt claimed gold in the senior boys 800-metre run with a time of 1:54. Ethan Fitch, from Ecole L'Equinoxe, won the midget boys high jump attaining a height of 1.70 metres. Jonathan Stoppa, from Madawaska Valley District High School, captured gold in the senior boys 3,000-metre run with a time of 8:46. Stoppa also took silver in the 1,500-metre run. Luke Hansen, from Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI), took first place in the midget boys long jump with a distance of 5.91 metres.
Claiming silver in the senior girls discus throw was Fellowes' Melanie Weisenburg. Eily Rauliuk-Dunn, from Mackenzie Community School, took second place in the senior girls 800-metre run. Valour's Mackenzie Douglas grabbed silver in the junior boys javelin throw. Justin Smith, from Arnprior District High School, captured second place in the senior boys shot put and third place in the discus throw. Valour's Ethan Bullivant finished second place in the senior boys discus throw.
Winning bronze in the junior boys 400-metre dash was Valour's Dante Hoffman. In the junior girls javelin throw, Valour's Tana Doughty claimed third place. Arnprior's Ben Fraser took third in the junior boys 100-metre hurdles. Brayden Schimmens, from Bishop Smith Catholic High School, claimed bronze in the midget boys discus throw. Valour won bronze in the midget boys 4x100-metre relay.
Qualifying for provincials was Fellowes' Abby Martin, who placed fourth in the girls 100-metre intellectual dash. Equinoxe's Sophie Levasseur qualified fourth in the midget girls 3,000-metre run. Erin Sweeney, from Opeongo High School, took fourth in the midget girls shot put. Valour's Sophie Warren qualified for the senior girls 1,500-metre run.
Dakota Perrin, from Jeanne-Lajoie, finished in fourth place in the junior boys shot put. Opeongo's Luke Verch placed fourth in the junior boys high jump. Fellowes' Tyler Hartwick took fourth in the junior boys discus throw. RCI's Josie Doering claimed fourth in the midget girls discus throw. Madawaska Valley's Laura Yantha took fourth in the senior girls 3,000-metre run.
