Prince Harry’s birth shattered marriage: Di

Prince Charles and Princess Diana were never closer than in the weeks leading up to the birth of Prince Harry.

But that was the three-year marriage’s high-water mark. It was all downhill after that.

A new slew of the late princess’s private tapes - sent to her biographer Andrew Morton - is shedding more light on the implosion of the royal marriage.

Prince Harry was born Sept. 15, 1984.

“Charles and I were very, very close to each other the six weeks before Harry was born, the closest we’ve ever, ever been and ever will be,” Diana said in the tapes, obtained by the Daily Mail.

“Then, suddenly, as Harry was born, it just went bang, our marriage: The whole thing went down the drain.”

Among Charles’ frustrations about the new baby was that Harry was a boy and he had wanted a girl. Diana said she knew the royal bairn would be a boy but didn’t tell her husband.

“Harry arrived, Harry had red hair, Harry was a boy. First comment was: ‘Oh God, it’s a boy.’ Second comment: ‘And he’s even got red hair,’” Diana says on the tapes.

“Something inside me closed off. By then, I knew Charles had gone back to his lady (Camilla Parker Bowles), but somehow we’d managed to have Harry.”

At first, Charles was petulant about the new baby, going so far as to tell Diana’s mother: “We were so disappointed — we thought it would be a girl.”

“Mummy snapped his head off, saying: ‘You should realize how lucky you are to have a child that’s normal,’” Diana said.

But the troubled princess added that “Harry was a complete joy” and his father soon bonded deeply with the ginger-haired hellraiser.

“Charles loved the nursery life and couldn’t wait to get back and do the bottle and everything. He was very good — he always came back and fed the baby,” Diana said in the tapes.
