Rockwood takes Grade 8 softball championship

PETAWAWA – Rockwood Public School outlasted Highview to become crowned softball champions of the county.

The 2017 Renfrew County Elementary Interscholastic Athletic Association West Grade 8 softball tournament on June 12 marked the final major sporting event of the school year for these pre-high schoolers. Following a long day of baseball hosted by the Petawawa Civic Centre, Rockwood defeated Highview 12-7 in a hard fought championship game.

The teams, from elementary schools across the western half of Renfrew County, all played in the opening round of the tournament, advancing based on their number of wins or their runs for and

against totals.

Rockwood had shutout Ecole L'Equinoxe in the semi-finals, while Highview advanced over Bishop Smith Catholic High School's blue squad. Rockwood had earned a berth in the semi-finals with a perfect record in the round robin collecting a highest possible tournament score of eight points suffering only eight runs against.

Highview made it to the semi-finals with six points and a low runs against tally of 11. In the quarter-finals, L'Equinoxe defeated Bishop Smith's gold squad 7-5, while Bishop Smith's blue squad donwed Valour K-12 School 10-8.

The tournament also included participation from Mackenzie Community School, Pine View Public School, Champlain Discovery Public School, Beachburg Public School, St. Mary's Catholic School, Eganville District Public School and St. Anthony's Catholic School.
