A vertical way of looking at healthy eating

A vertical garden is growing inside the Pembroke Public Library.

 

Earlier this year, the Pembroke Public Library applied for a grant through the County of Renfrew’s Healthy Kids Community Challenge to help them to develop and improve programming geared towards healthy eating.

By August, the library received the news that they had been chosen as a recipient of a $2,000 grant to go towards the purchase of a Tower Garden. The library installed the Aeroponic growing system inside the children’s department and the garden was planted at the beginning of September. Now, after more than three weeks, a healthy variety of fresh greens and herbs are sprouting through the soil.

To incorporate the vertical garden within the library’s programming, a Gardening & Healthy Cooking Club will be taking place every other Saturday at 11:30 a.m., with the first session kicking off on Oct. 14. Kids and parents will be able to engage in the classes together, as they learn how to take care of a garden and how to make healthy meals using the fruits and vegetables from that garden.

The Pembroke Horticultural Society will be assisting with the program by teaching the skills and techniques involved with gardening. Local organic farmer Jason O’Brien will be proving the fresh organic vegetables used for the classes.

“We’ll talk to kids and their parents about the benefits of healthy eating and we’ll share resources provided by the County of Renfrew,” Lioutsia Schizkoske, Pembroke Public Library children’s librarian.
