Unlucky Friday the 13th for the Lumber Kings

By Celina Ip

Luck did not run in favour of the Lumber Kings on Friday the 13th.

Facing off against the Hawkesbury Hawks at Robert Hartley Sports Complex, the Pembroke team appeared to be cursed that day as they fought with all their might – but to no avail.

Despite their best efforts, all of the Kings’ shots were blocked and their attempts were crushed by the powerhouse Hawks who savagely shut out their opponents with a whopping 8-0.

The Hawks slammed 47 shots at Pembroke's net, compared to the 38 shots the Kings responded with.

In response to the constant rapid fire on the Kings’ net, both of the Kings’ goaltenders displayed great prowess as Jake Smith turned away 23 of those shots while fellow goaltender Nick Manousos saved 16 shots on his team’s net.

Despite the Kings’ defensive attempts, the Hawks proved to be stronger as netminder Chris Cuglietta blocked all 38 shots to frustrate the Kings and secure his team’s 8-0 shutout.

The Lumber Kings’ downfall appeared to have came by way of their special teams which failed to save them during penalty kills.

While both teams racked up an almost equal amount of time in the penalty box – six minutes on three infractions for the Lumber Kings and eight minutes on four infractions for the Hawks – the latter scored on all of their power play opportunities while the Lumber Kings missed out on all of their own.

The first period saw Hawks’ Zachary Fournier net the first two goals (assisted by David Jankowski and Chris Smith) and the third goal was sunk by Jankowski with support from Fournier.

Into the second period, star player Fournier scored his third goal of the game, once again with assists from Jankowski and Smith. A few minutes later, Smith bumped up the score 5-0, with help from Fournier and Mike Nantais.

The third and final period saw the Hawks rack up three more goals, burying the Kings in a hole much too deep to get out of. Tyler Boivin netted the sixth goal of the game (off assists from Nantais and Fletcher Anderson) which was followed up by a goal from Jankowski (assisted by Nicolas Guillemette and Smith) and Patrick O’Neal sunk the final goal of the game to solidify the Hawks 8-0 victory over the Kings.

Three Star Selection: Chris Cuglietta (Star #1, Hawsk), Zachary Fournier (Star #2, Hawks), David Jankowski (Star #3, Hawks).
