Pembroke Silver Stick kicks off 2017 tournament

Local teams struggled as the 33rd Terry O’Neill Pembroke Silver Stick Tournament officially opened Friday night with Atom squads hitting the ice.

Over the next four weekends, the best of minor hockey teams in the region, as well as those from eastern Ontario, southern Ontario and eastern Quebec will be competing at the Pembroke Memorial Centre (PMC) and the Pembroke and Area Community Centre (PACC). Atom action will continue today and Sunday.

On Friday, the Pembroke Atoms opened up for the Atom 'B' Division with a 1-1 tie against the Brockville Junior Braves after three overtime periods. Cooper Geddes scored for the Kings, assisted by Brady Neville and Addison Robillard, while the Braves responded with a goal from Robbie Wilgosh.

The Petawawa Patriots were shutout by the Kanata Blazers 4-0. Kanata received scoring from Connor Andre, Brayden Irvine, Tate Wightman and Karan Chawla. The Renfrew Timberwolves beat the Loyalist Jets 5-1. Scoring for the Timberwolves were Owen Daber and Kane Yeretch, both who scored twice, and Corson Scobie. Assists came from Connor Hanniman, Courtney Vander Ploeg, Nicholas Scerba and Lakyn Zadow. The lone Jets marker came from Braden Fleming.

In the Atom 'C' Division, the Muskrat Voyageurs defeated the Douro Dukes 5-2 with goals from Nathan Collette, who scored twice, John Thrasher, Riley Couturier and Kyle St. Amour. Assists came from Collette, Jaxon Cooke and Hunter Alport. Weston Moore scored twice for the Dukes. The Sturgeon Lake Thunder shutout the Deep River Knights 5-0 with goals from James McMurray, who scored twice, Rory Miller, Dawson Anderson and Weston Vardy.

The Valley Storm edged out the Powassan Hawks 5-4 on the strength of goals from Wyatt Hicks, who recorded two goals, Cash Welk, Kale Gorgerat and Aydan Flegal. Scoring for the Hawks were Austin Oshell, with two goals, Seth Grawbarger and Will Hanselman.

In the Novice 'C' division, the Muskrat Voyageurs completely rolled over the Tweed Hawks 13-1. Cedrik Dionne and Jaxson Allmand scored four goals each, while Colton Vereyken notched two goals. Andrew Enright, Wyatt Lang and Jakob Dumouchel contributed singles. The Douro Dukes shutout the Deep River Knights 3-0 with goals from Grady Coughlin, with two, and Max Niemann.

The Muskrat Voyageurs beat the Mariposa Lightning 4-1. Vereyken scored twice, while Dionne and Dumouchel added singles. Mason Quinn scored for the Lightning. The Valley Storm shutout the Sturgeon Lake Thunder 11-0 with Gage Martinat leading the offence with six goals. Singles came from Ava Recoskie, Jayden Finucane, Noah Lavigueur and Tyler McEnery.
