Marriott opening hotel in Petawawa in 2019
The Town of Petawawa held a special groundbreaking ceremony on Nov. 17 to celebrate the TownePlace Suites Hotel being built at the corner of Petawawa Boulevard and Murphy Road - with an expected 2019 completion date. PETAWAWA – Petawawa will have a new accommodation option for visitors to choose from, by 2019.
Following a ground-breaking ceremony on Nov. 16, it was announced that construction on the $12-million TownePlace Suites by Marriott will officially begin on Nov. 20, with the project expected to be complete by spring of 2019.
“This is an exciting day for the town as we celebrate the groundbreaking of this fabulous facility,” said Mayor Bob Sweet. “Thank you David for having the faith in coming here and investing in our community and we wish you all the best as you move forward with this project. I think this is a terrific opportunity to put in pace a facility that is much needed out here in the Upper Ottawa Valley and we’re happy that you’ve taken the leap to bring it here.”
Owner and developer David Hornstein said he decided upon Petawawa as a location for the new TownPlace Suites hotel, considering the town’s lack of accommodation options and the particular need for an extended-stay hotel to serve the Upper Ottawa Valley community.
“We've been in the hotel development and operation business for over 20 years now.. we have specialized in going to secondary communities that have a lack of accommodation and so we’re always looking for different locations to do possible development,” said Hornstein. “When we saw the lack of accommodation on the market in Petawawa, we wanted to be able to help fill that gap and keep people here and create economic impact for the community.”
Located at the corner of Petawawa Boulevard and Murphy Road, the extended-stay hotel is expected to employ approximately 30 full-time and part-time employees and will offer a total of 80 rooms to serve a variety of accommodation needs.
“This hotel is specifically designed for the extended stay market – so for folks who want to stay longer than the three days which would be an average length of stay. It will give people a galley-style kitchen with facilities that allow them to actually prepare meals in their suites, so that they’re not always having to go out to restaurants. It will also provide all of the necessary facilities so people really feel like they're at home when they’re staying in our hotel,” said Hornstein.
The hotel will be a suitable open for people who are relocating to the area but have not yet found a permanent residence, out-of-town construction employees, corporate workers involved in weekend business ventures, people dropping by for sports tournaments and families visiting the area who may desire something more than a traditional hotel room.
Hornstein also noted that the new hotel will be closely situated to the eastern end of Algonquin Park and snowmobiles trails which will be convenient for many tourists and outdoor enthusiasts visiting the area.
“I know that the folks here are very active in attracting sports tournaments and the location here makes it very desirable for a lot of people who want to take advantage of that,” said Hornstein. “Also, we took note of the fact that we have a major snowmobile trail that runs directly in front of the site and we are going to look forward to be able to service a lot of the snowmobile traffic that inevitably comes through here as well.”
