RANKIN – The Winter Olympics may have had a rival in Rankin.
On Sunday, under a hard bout of freezing rain, Team Verch and Team Resmer battled it out in the adult team games portion of the Rankin Winter Carnival, held at the Rankin Culture and Recreation Centre.
Kyle Verch, Joshua Verch, Jill Hamlin and Melissa Boldt faced Riley Resmer. Donna Resmer, Myia Resmer and Corey Peplinskie in a series of competitions, each more challenging than others.
In the end, Team Verch came out ahead, winning the bed race, the hay bale roll, the log push, the toilet seat horseshoes and the ski race. Team Resmer won the bobsled race.
The Rankin Winter Carnival, which got its start in 1965, wrapped up Sunday following two weekends of activities. It started with a hockey tournament held Feb. 2 and 3, a hymn sing and public skating on Feb. 4. Then there was a spaghetti supper on Feb, 9 along with the crowning of the Carnival King and Queen, more skating, a bonfire and a euchre tournament.
The core of the carnival was the weekend of Feb. 10 and Feb. 11, where everything from snowmobile games, scavenger hunts, photography and stuffed animal contests, adult and kids wood events, cow milking, Hungry Hippo, cake walks, painting classes, snowshoe obstacle course, chainsaw demonstrations, movies, autions and much more.
Kellie Hisko-Benoit, carnival coordinator, said overall the annual carnival went well, despite the bad weather on Sunday.
“We had a couple of new events, like the scavenger hunt and the snowshoe obstacle course which people liked,” she said. “Our trivia nights were a huge success, being sold out, and we had a nice turn out for the kids activities.”
Hisko-Benoit said she and the carnival organizers are very grateful to the sponsors and volunteers who helped make this possible in the first place.
