Child care expanding in County
County of Renfrew families are getting a new licensed child-care space.
During the Feb. 15 County of Renfrew Social Services Committee meeting, the county announced it’s plan to address the growing need for accessible and high-quality child care through the recent approval of a fifth licensed family home agency.
“Two of our homes are in very rural communities – with one in Killaloe and one that is halfway between Arnprior and Renfrew. In those areas of the community there's not enough families to support a licensed centre but there are enough families to support a licensed home, so the county agreed to move forward with approving and providing funding for a fifth home,” said Judy Mulvihill, County of Renfrew manager of child care and early years services.
In December 2017, the County had four licensed family homes that served a total of 24 children. With the fifth and latest addition, the County will now have three licensed family home agencies in Pembroke, one located in Killaloe and one serving the Renfrew-Arnprior area – to serve more than 30 children.
Mulvihill said that they are thrilled to support the new licensed family home, as the need for child care is continually growing in the county.
“A licensed family home agency provides the save service as a licensed child-care centre except that the licensed family home operates within a home and is run by a family,” said Mulvihill. “Once the family is screened and the home is approved by us, it becomes a licensed home and the county can provide funding to support payment for the daycare fees and also provide financial support to serve children that have any special needs.”
Mulvihill added that it’s great news for families in Pembroke and the surrounding area as local families will benefit from the new licensed child-care space that is more convenient and closer to home.
“The fifth home is in the stages of being opened and will be welcoming kids this March,” said Mulvihill. “For families that are interested in learning more about these licensed homes, they can call our office and we'll put them in touch with the right person.”
