EOSSAA's best competes at Forest Lea
LAURENTIAN VALLEY – The top female high school skiers in eastern Ontario took to the challenging Forest Lea ski trails last week.
With unseasonably warm temperatures and pristine trail conditions, teams from Jeanne-Lajoie, Mackenzie Community School, Valour High School and Renfrew Collegiate Institute all advanced to provincial finals after a day of competition in the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (EOSSAA) Nordic Ski Championships hosted by Jeanne Lajoie on Feb. 14.
Jeanne-Lajoie skiers put in a dominant performance in the junior girls four-kilometre race with Samantha Csisztu sliding into first place with a time of 12 minutes, nine seconds. Sophie Levasseur posted an equally remarkable time of 12:31 taking second place in the junior girls class and first in the open class. Securing a third place finish was Lily Chubaty, from Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute, who recorded a time of 15:31.
Jeanne-Lajoie and Valour qualified as teams for the provincials collecting 20 points and 40 points respectively. Qualifying as individual competitors for the provincials were Levasseur, Chubaty, Emily Eadie and Chanelle Howard, from L'Equinoxe, Valour's Jessica Yemen, Bobbi Lavoie and Emma McInnes, and Grace Hill, from Almonte District High School.
In the senior girls 6.5-kilometre run, Almonte's Caitlyn Stowe captured first place in both the senior girls and open class with a time of 18:10. Valour's Catherine Bell took second in the senior girls and open class with a time of 19:08. Rounding out the top three in the senior girls was Valour's Sophie Warren with a time of 19:51.
Mackenzie led in the team scores with 30 points, while Valour took second with 32 points. Almonte and Jeanne-Lajoie qualified with 44 points and 60 points respectively. Qualifying as individual competitors were Stowe, Bell, Warren, Valour's Fiona Thomas, in the open class, Kingston's Annika Curtis, Jeanne-Lajoie's Mary Summerby and Brooklyn Eady, Chloe Goss, from Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, and Almonte's Emma Hill and Pippa Norman.
The Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Nordic Ski Championships will be held at Laurentian University in Sudbury on Feb 22.
