PLK beat SF Bears in shootout

SMITHS FALLS – It took a shoot out to settle things between the Pembroke Lumber Kings and the Smiths Falls Bears in the CCHL.

The Kings ended up on top 3-2 at the Smiths Falls Memorial Centre Friday night, following a closely fought battle which the Bears came within nine seconds of winning.

Leading 2-1 in the closing moment of the game, Smiths Falls was moments away from securing a win when Lumber King Jarrad Vroman scored on the power play to even things up 2-2 and force overtime. Jacob Kamps and and Malcolm Arseneau assisted on the play.

Following a scoreless overtime period, it went to the shootout. Kamps was up and wasn't successful, neither was Alex DiCarlo of the Bears. The next round of shooters had Matthew Barnaby score for the Kings, while Smiths Falls' Mitchell Larabie missed.

Arseneau put it away for Pembroke with the last shot.

The win in the final few games left in the regular season edges Pembroke ever closer to clinching a spot in the playoffs, due to start later this month.

Following a scoreless first period, Kamps scored a shorthanded goal solo to put the Kings on the scoreboard in the second.

Michael Larose for the Bears scored twice, one on the power play in the second period, then early in the third period to give his team the lead. Larabie earned assists on both goals, while DiCarlo and Brett Humberstone each picked up one.

During regulation time, Pembroke's Jake Smith stopped 39 out of 41 shots on net, while Bears' goalie Bradley Dobson made 41 saves out of 43 shots.

Kamps was named the game's first star, while Larose was selected the second star and Arseneau was the third star of the game.

The Lumber Kings play Sunday at the Pembroke Memorial Centre when they host the Nepean Raiders. Game time is 7 p.m.
