Highview Hawks win Grade 8 girls west basketball tournament

The Highview Hawks Black captured the West division Grade 8 girls basketball title with an 18-12 win over Bishop Smith Crusaders Gold in the championship game at Bishop Smith on April 24.
On the way to the final, both teams were undefeated through the round robin, with Bishop Smith seeded first and Highview second as Bishop held a slight advantage in the record/ratio calculation of 37 to 34.
In the opening playoff game, Highview beat seventh place Mackenzie Community School Mustangs 30-8 and in the semifinal went on to beat Valour Voyageurs Green 34-13 to advance to the final.
In round robin play in Pool C, Highview Black edged the L'Equinoxe Patriotes 15-13, beat Mackenzie 22-4 and Champlain Discovery Dragons 31-3.
In its playoff game, the Gold Crusaders easily handled eighth place St. Anthony's 21-2 and in the semifinal hung on to beat L'Equinoxe 16-12 to advance to the championship game.
In Pool A round robin action, Bishop Gold beat Valour White 35-6, Beachburg Bears 11-4 and Highview Red 32-4.
In the third place game, L'Equinoxe edged Valour Green 23-22 in a hard-fought battle. L'Equinoxe, which finished fourth after the round robin play, faced Beachburg in the playoff round, winning 23-8 to advance to the semifinal.
In Pool C preliminary round action, the Patriotes beat Mackenzie 13-9 and Champlain Discovery 14-4.
Going into the playoffs, Valour Green was the third seed and faced sixth seed Rockwood, coming out on top with a 15-6 win to advance to the semifinal.
In preliminary action in the B Pool, Valour Green beat Bishop Blue 26-6, Rockwood 22-14 and St. Anthony's 4-0.
Fifth seed Beachburg beat Valour White 16-4 and Highview Red 22-8 in Pool A action.
Rockwood was seeded sixth after the round robin, beating Bishop Blue 14-2 and St. Anthony's 22-2 in Pool B play.
In seventh place was Mackenzie, which beat Champlain 16-10 in Pool C preliminary action. St. Anthony's finished eighth beating Bishop Blue 14-6 in Pool B round robin play.
Highview Red ranked ninth and earned an 18-11 win over Valour White. In its playoff game, Highview Red lost 16-10 against Champlain.
In other playoff action, Bishop Blue (10th) beat Valour White (11th) 16-10.
In the consolation final, Bishop Blue edged Champlain 13-12.
Highview black, Bishop Smith Gold and L'Equinoxe now advance to the Tournament of Champions May 1 at Opeongo High School where they will face off against the top three teams from the East division – Walter Zadow Public School Arnprior, St. Micheal's Catholic School Douglas and St. Joseph's Catholic High School Renfrew.
