I am sorry but the author in the noted article is completely wrong in his/her assertion.
The fact is, with restrictive firearms legislation Canada, as well as the rest of the countries with similar legislation have significantly higher rate of violence against women.
Prior to submitting this letter, the author should have studied the 'Factual' information available rather than respond with knee-jerk reaction.
It is estimated that 92% of felony sexual assaults against women are not reported, this is likely due to theshame or social pressure victims would feel.
Bearing this in mind, Canada has three (3) times higher rate than the United States, where firearms ownership is more common.
States with "Shall Issue" carry permits have an even lower rate. The Cities/States which prohibit ownership of handguns have similar rates to Canada, ie. Chicago.
This information is freely available on the United Nations web site, Further break downs are available through interpol.
The fact is, if Canada had less restrictive Legislation, and organizations who proportedly support women were prepared to assist them in personal self defence, the likelyhood of less crime against women would be the result.
My question to the author however is, how many shelters, how much assistance could your types of groups provided for the 2 billion dollars spent on this long gun registry to this date?
