A smog advisory has been issued for the Pembroke-Petawawa area as a haze cloud generated by forest fires in Quebec has drifted into the region.
More than 50 forest fires are burning in Quebec, including eight that remain out of control, according to Quebec's public safety agency.
The Ontario Ministry of Health issued the smog alert earlier at 9:25 a.m. today to cover most of Renfrew County west to Barry's Bay.
The ministry said the easterly flow of polluted air from forest fires in Quebec was the cause of the high smog levels.
Area residents will likely notice the haze if they look across the Ottawa River towards the Pontiac.
The advisory also includes Brockville-Leeds-Grenville, Prescott-Russell, Smith Falls-Lanark-Sharbot Lake, Cornwall, and the City of Ottawa.
As the low moves eastward, and another low pressure system moves eastward over northwestern Ontario, cooler temperatures, west to northwesterly winds are expected across the province tomorrow, the advisory states. The fires have destroyed over 40,000 hectares since they ignited last week. A fire 300 kilometres north of Trois Rivieres has forced the evacuation of 1,300 people from a reserve.
