Youths facing charges after threats made against Renfrew school

Two youths are facing charges following a threat made against a Renfrew school on Monday, June 6.

The Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment said school administration from Renfrew Collegiate Institute contacted them around 10:50 a.m. on Monday to advise of a threat made against the school. While police did not identify the exact nature of the threat, they did say that threatening graffiti messages had been located at various locations around the school.

Police reported that officers went to the school and began an investigation into the occurrence and that a police presence was maintained at the school on Tuesday, June 7 because of the threats. Reports indicate around 10 officers were present both inside and outside the school. Some parents opted to keep their children home on Tuesday but an exact number was not available.

Police have now charged a 15-year-old with mischief and uttering threats and also a 14-year-old with mischief, uttering threats, assaulting a police officer and obstructing a police officer.

The accused youths were released and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Renfrew at a later date. The identities of the accused have been withheld as they are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The incident comes at a time of concern due to a series of school shootings in the United States where six school shootings have taken place since the beginning of May, eight if you include a school bus shooting and an incident in which an 8-year-old found his mother’s gun and took it school in his back pack. In the six shootings, 24 people have been killed including 22 in the Robb Elementary School tragedy in Uvalde, Texas. In the six shootings another 29 were injured.
