Olympic Style Wrestling in Pembroke
Three years ago a gym teacher from Jeanne-Lajoie approached the Renfrew Wrestling Club about starting a school program in her school to allow students to learn the exciting sport of Olympic Wrestling. Every January all the schools in the Renfrew area have a school wrestling program that lasts for 3 months. Then all the schools get together at the Grant Lavallee qualifier where they compete for a team championship as well as a chance to have individual athletes invited to join Team Renfrew.
Jeanne-Lajoie has won the team title for the last 3 years running, they also had 21 athletes invited to join the Renfrew team this year.
The short season sees the team competing in 3 tournaments. The first of which was just this past weekend in Oshawa on April 18th. We will also be traveling to the Ontario Provincial Championships on April 25th in Milton and the Eastern Canadian Championships in Niagara Falls, ON to be held over 3 day from May 8th to 10th.
This weekend’s tournament saw Team Renfrew’s athletes rally for an amazing 32 medals in total with the remainder of our athletes just missing the podium.
Below is a picture of the 9 athletes from the Pembroke club who participated this past weekend, along with a team picture of the 50 athletes from Team Renfrew. The Pembroke athletes are:
Back Row: Riley Fabian (3rd ), Owen Fabian (Just off Podium), Halle Ward (2nd), Alexis Gagnon-Klentz(1st)
Front Row:Jayden Gorr (3rd), Joshua Gagnon-Klentz (Just off Podium), Chase Cochrane ( 4th), George Dado (3rd), Virgini Clement ( 3rd)
I would like to congratulate all of the athletes who participated this past weekend and wish all good luck for next weekend’s championship.
You may see some of our athletes on May 2nd as we will be having a bottle drive in Renfrew and Pembroke, in an effort to reduce the cost associated with taking approx 55 athletes to the Eastern Canadian championships in Niagara Falls, ON.
