For the month of December, Heidi Hugli, Jaime Fletcher, Anna Cowan and Clara Biernacki, Grade 6 students at Highview Public School sold candy canes at lunchtime. For 50 cents each, Highview students bought and shared candy canes with their friends and teachers with all the proceeds going to Pembroke's Salvation Army. Their first day of holidays, Monday, Dec. 21, instead of sleeping in or playing video games, Jaime, Heidi, Clara and Anna met with Major Sharon Young at the Salvation Army location and got a tour of where food and donations are housed. The girls learned about the incredible need locally and how their money raised would be used to support many people over the holiday season. This is just the beginning of fundraising activities for this young group of girls as they are now interested in supporting other initiatives locally to give back to their community and those in need.
