Carl Gauthier of Pembroke drove his #52 truck to victory at the famous NASCAR track Watkins Glen in upstate New York. The July 9 & 10, 2016 event featured teams from all across the United States and 3 teams from Canada. This was Gauthier's first appearance at "The Glen" and his first race of the year. "We've been ready since early May, but cold weather and rain has kept us idle until now" said crew chief Betty Gauthier. Gauthier spent all day Friday practicing on the newly paved 3.4 mile fast road course and found it to be smooth and quick. By the time practice ended, he was up to speed posting a best time of 2:05.87.
Saturday morning Gauthier qualified 3rd with a time of 2:04.2
Saturday's race started with a damp track but the #52 truck held its own. Gauthier battled with the #4 modified 700 HP open wheeled car that ended with Gauthier beating him by a fender and taking home a 3rd place finish with a time of 2:03.3. "It was a great finish for our first race" said Gauthier.
Crew chief Betty Gauthier had a plan for Sunday's final race. "On Saturday we were faster than the 1st and 2nd place cars on the drop of the flag, so we needed to get out front right away" said Betty. Gauthier started the race in 2nd place and at the drop of the flag it was a drag race to turn one. Both racers went around side by side and Gauthier had the inside going into turn 3 and took the position and pulled ahead by 10 car lengths. The Dodge Viper kept coming back at him, but Gauthier stayed ahead, and lap after lap they raced hard. When the last lap flag flew, Gauthier was well ahead and went on to win 1st in class and 1st overall with a time of 2:02.9. "This was our biggest win ever" said Gauthier. The teams next event will be at Mosport on July 30-31, 2016. They will be looking for another good result.
