The Muskrat Voyageurs gave it all they had Sunday afternoon at the Pembroke and Area Community Centre but came just short of winning the C Division of the Art Bogart U18 weekend of the Terry O’Neill Pembroke Regional Silver Stick Tournament. In a feisty final, the Voyageurs were downed by the Duoro Dukes 3-2. As champions, the Dukes now move on to the International Silver Stick Tournament being held in Forest, Ont. in January.
In the AA division, the Upper Ottawa Valley Aces made to the semifinals where they faced the Gloucester Rangers, but it was the Rangers who prevailed 2-1 to move on to the AA final.
Other local teams failed to make the playoff round including the Pembroke Kings who went 1-1-1 in the round robin, and the Petawawa Patriots who went 1-2-0.
To make it to the C final, the Voyageurs first had to make it past the Tweed Hawks in a semifinal matchup, which the team did via a 4-3 score. In the round-robin portion of the tournament, the Voyageurs went undefeated beating the Bancroft Jets, Norwood Hornets, and Frontenac Flyers by scores of 6-2, 5-4, and 4-3 respectively.
In the tournament’s opening round on Friday, the Aces were doubled by the Northumberland Nighthawks 4-2. The team regroup and followed up the opening loss with two straight wins on Saturday. First was a 2-0 shut out victory over the Rideau St. Lawrence Kings followed by a 6-4 win over the Cumberland Jr. Grads.
The Pembroke Kings opened the tournament Friday with a 5-1 win over the Ottawa West Golden Knights. Late Friday night, the Kings tied the Kawartha Coyotes 3-3. On Sunday morning to close out the round robin, the Kings were downed 5-2 by the Castor River Canucks, which bounced Pembroke from the tournament.
The Petawawa Patriots began the tournament with a pair of losses, first 4-1 at the hands of the West Carleton Crusaders then 3-1 by the G.O.B. Blues. In its third game, the team rebounded with a 2-0 shut-out win over the Prince Edward County Kings.
The 39th annual Terry O’Neill Pembroke Regional Silver Stick Tournament is now in the books. The event concluded with a trio of donations. The Pembroke Regional Silver Stick committee donated $1,500 each to the St. Joseph’s Food Bank, the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s Soup Kitchen and The Grind.
